Geothermal Heating and Cooling (Ground Source Heat Pumps)

Mountain Aire Heating and Air Conditioning Inc. installs geothermal heating and cooling and radiant floor heating.  Geothermal heating and cooling is a very efficient form of heating and cooling for homes and businesses.

Geothermal heating uses loops of polyethylene pipe buried in the ground.  The pipes have fluid circulating through them to heat and cool your home.  The buried plastic pipe known as "earth loops" can be placed horizontally or vertically in the ground.  If enough land space is available a horizontal system can be put in.  In a horizontal loop system the pipes are placed about five to six feet deep in the ground, and run out 100 to 400 feet in length.  A vertical loop system is used when land space is limited, or when the ground is too hard to drill.  Small diameter holes are drilled 75 to 300 feet deep, and the pipes are run vertically.

Geothermal heating uses the heat from the ground to heat and cool your home.  The earth stays at about 50 degrees after you get 5 feet down into the ground.  In the winter, fluid circulating through the system's earth loop absorbs stored heat from the ground and carries it indoors.  The indoor unit compresses the heat to a higher temperature and distributes it throughout the building.  So, in the winter time your unit is already starting out with a temperature that is on average 10-30 degrees warmer than the outside air.  During the summer, the system reserves, pulling heat from the building, carrying it through the earth loop, and depositing it in the cooler earth.  So, in the summer time your unit is already starting out at a temperature that is much cooler than the outside air.
